The Lumberjack Review

2001 Boat Race Winners...The winners of the annual boat race drawing have been announced. The
$200 prize goes to Hiram Bender of Canton, MS., the $300 prize goes to Bucky Frame of
Summersville and the grand prize of $1,000 goes to Chris Colanera of Richwood.
Thanks to everyone who contributed and made this year's boat race fundraiser such a
success. The profits will be used for future scholarships.
Association Awards $6,000 In Scholarships - Comstock Family
Conveys $5,000 More...Three Richwood students are entering college this
fall with the help of scholarships awarded by the Alumni Association. Five more will
be assisted through scholarships made available by the children of Hugh and Nina Comstock.
Jessica Lee McLaughlin, granddaughter of the
late Norma McLaughlin received the largest RHS Alumni Scholarship - $1,000 a year for four
years. Alycia Marie Adams of Fenwick received a $1,000 scholarship. She is the
daughter of Russell Adams and Jo Ellen Hamrick.
The Kathleen Westfall Barger Memorial
Scholarship is given in the memory of Kathleen, by her husband Ross Barger, and
administered by the Association. It was awarded to Levi D. Bragg, son of Dan and
Dolly Bragg of Craigsville.
Comstock Family Scholarships were awarded to
Janis Rae Henline (Business Administration) and Jamie Renee Henline (Secondary Education),
daughters of Sanford and Elsie Henline of Richwood; Marcie Kay Flanagan (Chemistry),
daughter of Bill Cody and Cathy Lynn Flanagan of Calvin; Andrea Eileen Miller
(Pre-Medicine), daughter of Bill and Kimberly Miller of Nettie; James Kurt Kessler
(Computer Science), son of John and Rhonda Kessler of Richwood.
Cherry River Festival Boat Race Proves
Profitable...Alumni Association ticket sales for the
Cherry River Festival Boat Race surpassed expectations according to coordinators.
Prizes totaling $1,500 were awarded this year, and $2,032.49 was netted for Association
projects. The race was taken over this year from the Committee for the Improvement
of Richwood (CIR.)
Unpredicted water levels in the Cherry River
over the last few years have meant the actual "boats" have remained in storage
and a drawing has determined the winners. Coordinators hope to "return to some
form of water" next year.
It certainly paid to be from out of town in
this year's drawing. Winner of the $1,000 to prize was Larry Webb of Oldtown, MD;
Phillip White, Parkersburg, WV received $250; Garnet Boblett Byrne of Kent, OH won $150
and Christina Strickler of Alwexis, NC received $100.
Garnet wrote back, thanking the Association
for the $150, returning $50 as a donation. She said that the remaining went to her
daughter.
Thanks to all Alumni and friends who purchased
and sold tickets for the event.
Reminder...Your
dues are used exclusively for the RHS Alumni Association Scholarships. Some of you
have also made additional donations earmarked for the fund. It is really appreciated
by the students who are seeking assistance to continue their educations.
Remembering Norma...The Lumberjack Review Staff mourns the passing of Norma (Leatherwood)
McLaughlin '51.
In remembering Norma, Ann (Lusk) Spencer noted
that, "Norma was always very community minded and did everything she could to help
Richwood." After graduating Norma and her husband moved to Cleveland, but
returned to Richwood about 20 years ago. They ran "The Bright Spot" until
retirement. When Alumni Association mailings went out, Norma, along with Wanda Given
'49 were the workhorses who accomplished them.
Norma...you will be sorely missed.
Help Us With More Memorials...In the next edition of "The Lumberjack Review," we plan to
remember our friends and classmates who have passed away during this past year. If
you know of someone who should be included, please let us know. Please, take a
moment and email us
with your information.
How About A Cookbook...We're scattered all over and we've not only taken old favorite Richwood
recipes with us, we've developed new ones or maybe given a new flavor to an old one.
In either case, a cookbook would be a great way to share the old and the new, and
be a super fund-raiser.
We'd like to get everything together and
published for our upcoming Richwood Centennial.
When you send your recipes, make sure that the
ingredients and measurements are legible (and correct!) Mark each for a category,
i.e. main dish, meat, salad, etc.
If there is a special story or memory that
goes with the recipe, share that too. We'll try to include a brief bit along with
the recipe. When the recipe is one from the region you are in now, let us know.
And don't forget to include your name,
address, phone number (not for publication) and your RHS class, or your relationship to a
class member (husband, daughter, wife, great-aunt...)
Send your recipes by November 10 to: RHS
Alumni Associations Cookbook, PO Box 408, Richwood, WV 26261.
Updates...The Jukebox repair
project got a shot in the arm when Cherry Valley Furniture owner Rick Turley
volunteered labor and materials to replace the wood panels. Thanks Rick. And
thanks to RHS teacher Carl O'Dell, who, with the help of his students, will be restoring
the painted panels. Wanda keeps working. First it was the
Bell, then the Cannon, and most recently Wanda Given '49 raised the money needed to erect
a flagpole at City Hall. Often we overlook the contributions made through effort and
dedication. Thanks Wanda! Another seemingly tireless volunteer
for the Alumni Association is Bill Brewster. Bill handles much of the everyday
"stuff" at Alumni Hall and is always a willing spokesman for us. Roselyn
Ann (Roberts) Brown '51 fell and broke her hip and is recuperating at home.
Her address is HC 63 Box 67, Nettie, WV 26681.
Donations...Bill
and Mary Taylor, Jane Miller, Vivian McClung Montreas, Mary Jane (Khul) Knoff, Ray Friend,

Notice...The
Richwood High School Alumni Association is seeking address lists, especially for more
recent graduating classes. We also need class representatives to work with us in

your information.
Alumni Mailbox...Wanda Perrone
'56..."I can still hear the nostalgic sounds from the old jukebox and I
hope the restoration will be soon. Thanks staff members for a wonderful paper."
Tom Murphy..."Enclosed is a check for dues and
a donation for the jukebox. I sure enjoyed the music at the Grill and still remember
the good times we had..." Harry Gene White '47..."Oh
sweet memories of our main source of music at the Rainbow Grill during my great days at
RHS...thanks for the memories..." Kay Conley Sesions '54..."How
does this sound as a fund raiser? Everyone who comes home brings an item to be
auctioned off at the event. The money could be used to fix the jukebox..."
Mary Ellen Sparks Given '45..."It is wonderful
receiving correspondence and the "Lumberjack Review" -keeping us posted on
happenings of our RHS Alumni and Hometown. Mr. Pratt has been/is a wonderful person.
I have often thought it would be a tribute to him if a "This Is Your
Life" ceremony could honor him...You all keep up the good work - exciting isn't it?
Best of luck in your endeavors and God Bless each of you and your families."
Ethel Pearker '39..."Sure wish someone would
get a reunion for the Class of '39." Stuart L. Dean '54..."Thanks
for the wonderful "Lumberjack Review." Say hello to all former
friends." Steve Morris..."Thanks for
contacting me and keeping up the good work." Eldon Amick '49...is
looking for a 1949 yearbook. You can contact him at 1865 Cedarwood Dr., Melbourne,
FL 32935. Ann Skidmore Turner '51..."Can't wait to
see you all again. Will our ole jukebox be in operation? Guess it wont be hard
to get a group of band members together to practice with Mr. Pratt. I have my
trumpet. As to how about a song - a lot of '50's songs? and/or a square dance!
- if you can walk, you can square dance! Looking forward to our fall gathering.
I have been enjoying granddaughters age 6 and 3, and writing stories and
poems." Harry Gene White '47..."How are
members or persons selected for the RHS Sports Hall of Fame?...I'm just curious and I
think it is a great idea. Hope the jukebox repair is progressing." Tillie
DeGrotio Nicholson '53..."I was in Richwood the week of the Homecoming.
I want to say how impressed I was with all that is being done to make my hometown a
better place. The craft show was great. I did all of my Christmas shopping
there. Really underpriced."
